How will this help me?

This is where you start exploring topics you’re interested in and get to know yourself better.
Follow your curiosity and learn more about something that’s always appealed to you. If you don’t find it as interesting as you thought you would, that’s ok, you can cross it off you list of potential career paths. On the other hand, you might love it and hey presto, there’s some direction!

Write a blog post about something you care about and share it on

Medium is a cool site where you can share stories about your life or topics you're interested in. It’s basically a way of blogging without a blog and sharing your ideas with new people from all over the world.

How will this help me?

It’s going to get you out of your comfort zone! Writing about something you care about and putting it in front of people you don’t know can be really scary. Doing this will ease you into trying new things, taking small risks and will build your confidence when it comes to  getting your ideas out there!

Connect with someone you admire

Who inspires you? Is it someone famous, your favourite blogger or someone who is making their own small but inspiring difference to the world?  Whoever it is, your challenge is to send them a quick message explaining why they inspire you and thanking them for it. You could direct message them on twitter or find an email address on their website.

How will this help me?

First off, it will take you out of your comfort zone! Contacting someone you admire can spark off negative thoughts and feelings like - what will they think of me? Or what if they think I’m an idiot? But really, the worst case scenario is that they don’t reply. Whereas the best case scenario is that they do! So what’s to lose? Secondly, it’ll boost your confidence, if you can message you favourite person ever in the whole world, then dropping someone an email to ask a question about their career will seem like nothing compared to it!

Film yourself talking about your dreams for 3-4 minutes and watch it back.

When I say dreams, this could be your interests, your goals or why you want to make a change in your life.

How will this help me?

I’ve always found that saying things out loud makes them more real. If you’re finding it hard to talk to some of your friends or family about your struggle for direction, this is a great way to have a go at verbalising it without anyone else having to hear. Plus, if you’ve got some shaky ambitions that you don’t feel confident enough about to talk to anyone else about, saying them out loud will make them seem more real. Also watching them back helps you to see yourself the way you would see anyone else - as a person who is capable of working hard to achieve your dreams.

Take a strengths test

For a paid ($15) one try or for a free test try

How will this help me?

It can be hard to identify your strengths for yourself. These tools do it for you so you know which types of career to focus on.

Post a question about a career you’re interested in on

The question could be how do I get into a career as a ____?, what are the best things about being a ______? Or what are the downsides to being a ____? Even if you have no idea about what you want to do, pick a career related to a topic you’re curious about and do it!

How will this help me?

It will get you out of your comfort zone as you talk to new people and it will also show you that there are so many people that can help you to find your direction. Further down the road this is also a great way to do some off the cuff career research and get a real insight to careers you’re considering.

Take a values test

A great free one is

How will this help me?

This test will help you to identify your top values so you know what to prioritise in your life. This is key to finding your direction. You don’t want to be moving halfway across the country alone if your top values are your family and friends for example!

Watch a YouTube video about a topic that interests you

How will this help me?

Exploring your curiosity is all about getting to know yourself better. What are you interested in? What are you passion about? You’ll never answer these questions if you don’t take those little sparks of curiosity further and explore the topics that interest you. Watching a YouTube video is a simple way of testing a topic out to see if you really like it or not.

Create a Pinterest vision board

Simply create a new board on Pinterest and pin as many images as you like that inspire you and represent what your ideal life would look like a few years from now. I try to set myself a time limit of 30 minutes when I do this but it’s up to you!

How will this help me?

This is about getting to know yourself better. What are you interested in? What inspires you? And what do you want your future to look like? This task will give you a clear idea of the answers to all of these questions and give you a bit of a clearer idea of where you want to go in life!

Join a Facebook group or Subreddit about a topic you’re curious about and post something!

How will this help me?

This is a chance to explore your curiosity and find out more about topics you’re interested in. You’ll also have the chance to step out of your comfort zone by expressing your ideas to new people and interacting with them too.
